A KKTC student permit — also written TRNC student permit or student residence permit for North Cyprus — is the residence status you get when you are enrolled at a university or its language school in Northern Cyprus. It is the one long-stay route that does not ask you to freeze money in a local bank account, and there is no upper age limit: people in their thirties and forties use it as often as school leavers do. Universities do periodically introduce temporary enrolment restrictions for certain age groups, so check the current conditions when you apply.
This page explains what the permit actually is, what the 2026/27 numbers look like, how the application runs step by step, and how to check your permit status online on the official government portal. It is a residence permission issued by the TRNC immigration authorities on the basis of enrolment in an accredited educational programme. The most common basis is a university-run English or Turkish language course, because entry requirements are minimal: levels start from A1, so no language certificate is needed to begin.
Two things surprise people most often. First, there is no deposit and no proof-of-income threshold — that requirement belongs to the income-based residence permit, which is a different route entirely. Second, your legal status starts from the date you apply through the university, not from the date the plastic card is printed, so you are not left in a grey zone while paperwork moves.
Tuition is paid directly to the educational institution, not to an agent: €1750 for one academic year (2 semesters) or €2300 for one and a half years (3 semesters) of university language courses. There is no six-month option anymore; if you see a half-year price quoted somewhere online, it is out of date.
On top of tuition, budget for a medical examination of roughly $200, an immigration fee of about $20 paid online, health insurance for the year, and notarised translation of your documents, which is cheaper and simpler to do locally than at home. One timing trap worth knowing: the medical certificate is valid until 30 September regardless of the date you take the tests, so plan it close to the start of the academic year.
Total for the first year, one adult, excluding housing: roughly €2000–2300. Edhab’s support is free — we are paid by the institutions, not by you.
Two mistakes cause most of the delays we see: a name transliterated differently across two documents, and “turnkey documents” offers from people who never enrol you anywhere. The second one is a criminal matter and carries an entry ban, and it is being sold against a legal route that costs around two thousand euros a year.
The TRNC operates an official portal for student permissions: permissions.gov.ct.tr/staypermit (login page: permissions.gov.ct.tr/login). It is titled “KKTC ÖĞRENCİ İZİNLERİ SİSTEMİ / TRNC STUDENT PERMISSION SYSTEM”.
Sign in with the credentials created during your application and the portal shows the current state of your file. If the record does not appear, the usual cause is that your institution has not yet pushed the application through, not that something was rejected — ask the international office of your university, or ask us and we will chase it. Ignore third-party sites offering to “check your KKTC permit” for a fee. The government portal is the only authoritative source.
If you already hold a KKTC student permit, renewal is a smaller job than the first application. Apply in early September: your documents run on the academic year rather than on the date you filed them — health insurance and medical tests are valid from 30 September to 30 September.
Your diploma, school certificate and their translations are not collected again. Only two things are refreshed each year: health insurance and the medical tests — blood work for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis plus a chest X-ray, around $200. Renewal costs about €200 a year less than the first application, and no bank statement or proof of income is asked for.
Changing university or programme does not reset your permit — a transfer does not send you back to the start. The one real condition is that you are still studying, and the renewal itself is handled at your university, which deals with the immigration service on your behalf.
